King’s Quest II: Romancing the Throne
If you have played any other King’s Quest games, then this one may be your least favorite. The plot of this quest is very sparse, and is just about King Graham (who you play as) and his journey to find a wife. The maiden is locked up in a tower, and lies in a land that can only be reached through a door that requires three magical keys. Graham must search the land of Kolyma for the three keys, and each one is someplace different. Graham must face many challenges including a search under the sea, flying on a magic carpet, facing a vampire, and avoiding an evil witch named Hagatha. The start of the game is a little slow, but once you start hunting for the three magical keys, the pace picks up (for an old game).
Sometimes you have to perform actions that would be hard to come up with unless you have a walkthrough in front of you. There is also no sound except for a couple of sound effects such as a wave or a “ding” when you do something right (at least in my version of the game).
Compared to other old games, the graphics are not up to the standard. Everything is very pixel-like, and the colors are not vibrant and uplifting. In the game you move with the four directional keys, and type in commands such as “swim” and “open door”. It can be very frustrating when you accidentally step into a lake and you drown since you do not type in “swim” fast enough.
Although the plot has no depth and you never are gripping the edge of your seat, King’s Quest is still fun to play. This King’s Quests are one of the weakest, but has set a solid foundation for the other upcoming, epic games. The game is fun if you enjoy King’s Quest, but overall I would rate it a 4/10 stars.
