Game Review 1 (written by Truecrusader) Added on: 10/12/2006
Kings quest 3 is a charming story about a young slave boy who must escape from the clutches of an evil wizard (Mananaan). It is an interesting story. The game is made with a 'Typing' interface. For example, if you wanted to pick up the cup on the kitchen table you would have to type into the computer PICK UP CUP. It is an interesting way to create a game. Unfortunately this opens the game to, "too much" freedom. Kings quest 3 is a charming story about a young slave boy who must escape from the clutches of an evil wizard (Mananaan). For another example if you see a sparkly thing on the floor you cannot type into the interface PICK UP SPARKLY OBJECT ON FLOOR.
Also another drawback is that with the games graphics it's hard to see what’s useable and what’s not. You could spend 30 minutes investigating a room and still miss something. All in all, the game truly is a classic adventure. I would recommend anyone who likes adventure games to download this right away!
Game Review 2 (written by Sammy_oldschool) Added on: 08/30/2006 Though a member of the venerable Kings Quest series, this game I would have to say, sucks. Now call me a spoilsport, but this is due to the utter brain numbing difficulty this game is. I quickly got so frustrated, I downloaded a walk-through. No problems there, but the walk through then demanded that I cheat, but even then, and with the walk-through, I still couldn't complete this brain burning exercise in futility. My anger seethed as, time after time, I died yet again. The walk-through had to be followed EXACTLY or, oops, dead yet again. But still, you would think I would have won eventually. But know, if one didn't complete it fast enough, one was yet again, wait for it, doomed to die. Finally, I used the cheats to teleport to a room near to the end of the game, and watched the finely cut scene. Though you might think it a hollow victory, I felt a grim satisfaction in cheating my way to the end. So sue me.
On the subject of graphics, it was actually quite nice, for ega 160-200 game play, in fact they were approximately as good as the could possibly get, the animations were smooth and well done and quite a delight compared to kings quest 1 and 2. The (spoiler) dragon, was simply amazing, and quite fierce looking. I almost felt afraid of the gigantic beast. The (double spoiler) spider quite creepy me out and I began to feel a cool rage every time I say the odious wizard's cat. Not to mention the backgrounds, as luscious and detailed as one could hope for with the technology of the day, I still think the kitchen was the best ega ultra lo res graphics I have ever laid eyes on. The sounds were annoying but, (thank god) minimal.
To speak of the music would be to describe a fate worse then death herself. So I will not even try, but let us just say that I never want to hear another piece of Internal speaker music, ever, ever again.
The story itself (the most important part of an adventure game) was well done, if rather stereotypical, the plot banal but well executed. The ending may have been a shock 20 years ago, but know it is well known throughout the adventure gaming community and has lost much of its pizzazz, however if I had been a gamer then I might have been more fascinated then I was. In closing, this is a quite good game, if only it was not so ball busting hard.
