Game Review (written by Bjsarche) Added on: 02/26/2007
Silent Service is an awesome game I used to play for hours when I was younger. It’s a great submarine simulation game with good historical ties to World War two.
In this game you are the captain of a submarine and have complete control of where you want to patrol in the Pacific Ocean. You have your choice of submarine classes that have different speeds and payloads, this is great if you want a little more challenging of a game!
In the game you try and sink fleets of destroyers, battleships, aircraft carriers, destroyers, oil tankers, and merchant ships. During gameplay you have control over all functions of the submarine. You can watch other ships on the radar and find the best route in which to escape from destroyers.
You raise your periscope and aim your torpedoes at enemy ships, but be careful, destroyers are MUCH, MUCH faster than you and have depth charges to blow you out of the water. You have to control your depth and noise of your engines or else they will pick you up on sonar.
You will find that the destroyers are the greatest threat to you but the large battleships and aircraft carriers will award you with the most points for sinking them. This is where it gets tricky, with some of your submarines you chose, you will only have enough torpedoes to take out a battleship and maybe an aircraft carrier. These large ships are always escorted by destroyers which will race to your position the moment you fire your torpedoes. You have to be quick on the fire and quick on the escape, or if you can’t escape quiet enough so they cannot hear you, hence the name silent service.
My favorite part is to play the game with the most primitive submarine available, this only gives you two torpedoes and only able to fire out of front port holes. It is also a VERY slow submarine so you have to be sneaky, get the enemy in range, fire two good shots with torpedoes and hide. It is very challenging.
The game also allows you to surface and use a gun on your deck, this technique is best reserved for non military targets or ships you have crippled with your torpedoes. Taking on a war ship with your deck gun is suicide seeing that they have MUCH larger guns.
Overall this is one of my favorite games of all time.

Les quesenberry (01/20/2008) I really liked silent service as a kid and I think that it is still a very good game. I have been looking for it for a while to download. You can imagine how happy I was when I found it here |
