If Harry Potter were into chatting up girls, being rude to demons and damsels in distress and having a knack at saying the wrong thing at the right time to cause as much upset and annoyance as possible, you would get Simon.
Simon the Sorcerer to be exact. From that descriptive, I think you get the idea of who our hero is. A young teenage with a bad attitude and cheeky sense of humor who is unexpectedly thrown into the deep end of magic spells and sorcery in a magic, far-away land. It all starts for you and Simon when he loses his pet dog in a time portal in his loft from the result of black magic he is trying to conjure up in his spare time. He follows suit, and is taken (with his cute dog of course) to a magic far-away world where he simply ends up in the wrong place at the most inconvenient time.
You have to take control of our spunky Sorcerer, complete with bad attitude, to interact with his new surroundings and learn why he has been brought to the land and who is responsible for the portal. It’s a simple fantasy tale, but told with a modern stint being Simon. It’s how we would react to the wacky and weird world we see which makes it funnier to see it through Simons eyes.
The people you encounter all help you in someway, and you will stumble across challenges that are tricky and require some thinking about how and why you’ve come across it, but that’s what we want from puzzle games, right? A puzzle!
There is lots to interact with and see in various places like the Giants Pass where you need to get pass a sleeping giant (not that easy I might add!), and visit the Swaps which reek of Dagobah from the Star Wars films where you meet a very timid and shy creature named simply Swampling. The colors and attention to detail make every new place something totally different and you are absorbed in the world around you.
Simon is voiced with great dry-wit by British actor and funny man Chris Barrie, and this adds to the all round fun and humor of this brilliant and genre specific game. If you like the point and click adventure of the Monkey Island or Indiana Jones series then this is for you. It’s rude and crude, but most of all it’s a decent adventure, like the movie Willow, through epic lands to save yourself and ultimately, save the world!

Tsak (07/11/2006) This is an EXCELLENT graphic adventure feauturing Simon, a wanna be sorcerer who's teleported and trapped into an odd world after casting an unsuccessful spell. This Amiga version (the game was released both for the Amiga and the PCs) has nothing to envy from the PC one. Fantastic hand-drawn backgrounds, neat animation and laods of humor combined with logical and wierd riddles (some riddles require a more.surrealistic approach in order to be solved but that's ok with me), this game made in true Lucas Arts fashion, has everything a demanding player would expect. Too bad we didn't see the second episode of Simon being released for the Amiga. |
