Game Review (written by Vulkus) Added on: 03/27/2008
One of the first games I ever got was Trans Arctica, in this game you are traveling around a world on a large steam locomotive. You can travel forward and backwards. You have to protect your engine and carriages from raiders and rival trains. From memory most of the land was a frozen waste.
You had gun cars, freight cars and of course the engine up front. You had to trade in goods in order to upgrade your weapons on your train.
The sound effects of the game were quite realistic, due in part to the excellent sound chip on the Amiga. The graphics were nicely rendered stills for its time. Battle scenes were done in real time and in my opinion that is where the graphics suffered. However the game play more than made up for it.
When warring with a rival train you, maneuvered past each other like ships on the high seas. Then it was more of a blast fest than any real strategy, as the one with the bigger and more plentiful guns would win the battle. In later stages you could launch rockets at rivals.
Overall the game is an interesting mix of trading vs strategy. Everyday I would come home and fire up the Amiga and play this game, so it does have some ability to draw you in.
I would rate the game overall 6 out of 10.
