Game Review 1 (written by Pfcher) Added on: 10/24/2006
This by far is the best UFO game out. The new versions are nice but compared to the original this game takes the cake. The game play is simple and easy to learn. The weapons and options on the game are great. The graphics were top notch for the time. I think if they had more advertisement on this game it would have been a huge success. I totally recommend this game.
I've been playing it off and on for the past 10 years.
What’s great about it is the story line. Also the ability to build your base any where on the world. Researching alien technology and using it against them.
In the beginning you start off with regular human weapons. Although it may seem advance considering that we really don't have weapons of that nature yet. But it’s great to have a heavy laser rifle. Your team ability varies and you have to command each person with some sense of strategic ability. You can just send them out to be killed. I can clear a whole map with only four guys without casualty. As the game progresses you will get better armor. Better aircrafts. Better weapons. With better armor you can equip heavy armor and flying suites. The flying suites will come in very handy.
Researching the right thing to be successful is very important in this game. You have to research wisely or else you will have a hard time with the game. Later on in the game you will find alien bases on earth that you will have to raid. This is the best time to capture live aliens for interrogations. I totally suggest stun rods. As you get better at shooting down ufos they will find your base and attack your base if you’re not careful. Base security is very important. Make sure your base has a good gravity shield and fusion is key to your survival.
Heavy plasma is the most important research. Blaster launchers will help you a lot but make sure you know how to use them. This game isn't just about shooting them up also. You will have to take up a lot of missions to keep the public happy with helping you fight aliens. Some countries will sooner or later make packs with the aliens. That’s where you must do extra patrols to find alien bases. All in all this game is great you have great replay value in it and it never really seems to get boring.

Game Review 2 (written by Davok191) Added on: 09/16/2006
Turn based tactical grid combat may not be the most popular genre in games these days, but it’s certainly the most deep, and UFO enemy unknown is as deep as they get.
I first hired this game thinking it was along the lines of command and conquer, I was stunned at the type of game it was, the learning curve was incredibly high for someone who had never played the game before, but I pushed on because this game is so damn good.
The basic story line of the game is that aliens are coming to take over earth by military invasion, you are put in charge of X-com, a special forces group funded by all the world governments (at first) to fight the alien invasions.
During the course of the game countries who you fail to defend from the aliens may surrender, and will no longer give you funding, while countries you protect well may increase their funding, so you can research and produce weapons more.
There is some base modification you can do, from weapons labs to alien containment facilities incase you capture any alive. You will be informed from your radar stations (which can be upgraded) that you have detected a UFO, and asked if you would like to intercept it with your fighter jets (which you can also upgrade into alien like space fighters) if your fighters knock down the UFO, which can vary from little scout ships to mother ships, your then able to investigate the crash site with your squad, which you can equip with a variety of weapons such as assault rifles, rocket launchers and plasma pistols, and armour.
Sometimes when the squad gets there, you win instantly (as in there were no alien survivors) or there will be some opponents for you to fight, if you win, you get to keep the alien technology which can then be researched and duplicated. UFO recovery missions are usually quite easy, the harder ones are definitely when cities around the world are invaded by the aliens, then you have to send your squad to fight multiple well equip aliens, which usually have heavy equipment (that’s why you want those rocket launchers) failing city invasion missions can cost you lots of reputation with the victims country.
Over all you'll hopefully keep progressing until you’ve set up enough bases around the world so the aliens can’t attack ANYWHERE and the plot will move on but I of course won’t reveal anymore.
If you are into deep hardcore strategy then this game is definitely for you. Novices to the genre might want to steer clear of this game but hey I didn’t and I love the whole series.
