Game Review (written by Chrissi) Added on: 02/19/2008
A vertical scrolling shooter game that was based on the World War II Battle of Midway. The objective of the game is to take out a Japanese Air Fleet that bombed your American Aircraft Carrier. In your P-38 fighter plane, you will have to progress though sixteen levels, each with an end boss varying from Japanese aircraft carriers and battleships to Japanese bombers. Eleven of these levels feature air to sea battles, while the other five are all aerial conflicts. The game realistically gives you one life, but also features a refillable energy bar.
The energy meter can be reduced in several ways, such as enemy fire, being rammed by enemy planes, special attacks from bosses, and even your own weapon power ups. Once your energy bar is empty however, the game will end and the player will be forced to start over. Weapon power ups will replace your plane’s twin machine guns with various weapons, such as a shotgun, three way machine guns or even a laser, but these power-ups only last for a certain period of time before returning to the standard twin guns. There are also special attacks available, such as lightning or cyclones.
By destroying a complete formation of red enemy planes, a power up will be placed on the screen. This power-up will restore a little of the energy meter, but it can also be fired upon, turning it into one of a variety of weapon power-ups. Few rare power-ups also exist, one of which will yield Capcom’s symbol, which will completely restore the energy meter. The Plane symbol will provide you with reinforcements, which takes the form of two wingmen to assist you briefly. Random green planes may also enter from behind, which will reward a score bonus if destroyed. Every level also has hidden bonuses that can be discovered by simply firing randomly. When the target is hit, a bonus will appear, one of which is the ability for your plane to fire the armour-piercing laser weapon for about one minute.
To defeat an end boss, the player must destroy at least 70% of the boss’s health, or you will be forced to go back a complete the mission again. At the end of each level, the energy bar is refilled and points will be awarded for the amount of target you destroyed, and how many loop manoeuvres that you have left.
