Game Review (written by Gayboytanko) Added on: 08/28/2007
I used to love this game and I guess playing it now, it still has something that most of the modern football (or soccer depending on where you live) games do not have. Simplicity. With single button joystick control, all you do is move around and mash the button in true C64 fashion (although this game did not destroy the joysticks anywhere near as badly as some of those other games!).
Of all of the C64 games that I played, this was probably my most played one in the last few years that the C64 had a place in our house. It was fun as both a one player and a two player game and most of the time I would just play it so I could foul my opponents players and see the sour look on their face when they thought they were certain to score.
Although the graphics in 6 A Side Soccer were not spectacular, that is even by C64 standards, the game play was addictive as was the ability to foul players leading to some poorly animated onscreen fisticuffs. Whilst the purists will probably be disappointed at the fact that the developers did not let the rules of the sport get in the way of creating a good game, I personally believe that the developers should be commended for taking the gamble and modifying the rules to some extent in the interests of making the game fun and appealing to people of all ages, regardless of their familiarity with the sport. Having played soccer for 12 years, the modified rules did not upset me, and I think that without the modification of the rules, that is if the game was developed with the proper rules, it would have been boring and would not have offered anything more than any other soccer game on the C64 (especially considering the quality of the graphics).
