Set in the year 2030, you start the game as an unknown with $2000 cash in New York City. The objective of the game is to amass wealth and reputation, but it’s up to you how you do it. You can spend your time in the Arena (with your own car, or borrow a Killer Kart on Amatuer night), risking your life for money and fame, or you can buy a car and make deliveries all over the East Coast.
Need some extra cash? Pop over to Atlantic City and visit the casino for some blackjack or video poker – gambling fans will take note that the video poker is actually winnable, as any pair gets your money back! I’ve maxed out on money ($999,999) playing video poker, only to get a surprise as I left the casino.

Once you have enough money to buy a car (the initial $2000 can buy you a car, but you won’t last long on the street!), you will be given a myriad of choices in body type, suspension, armor, power plant (engine), tires, and weapons – you can own up to 8 different cars, and each of them different! My favorite design involves a large engine, heavy rear armor, and a flamethrower – it’s easier to hit your enemies while you run away, as they are lined up perfectly, and have a harder time hitting you through the smokescreen that the flamethrower throws out!
As your reputation grows, you will be invited to participate in different secret missions that have you chasing all over the place gathering clues – the last secret mission puts your name in the paper if you succeed! I’ve actually found that your reputation can grow too fast to truly enjoy everything the games offers – if that happens to you, you can pick up some missions from the AADA, and sell them in Joe’s Bar. That will lower your reputation (as well as give you some extra money) and let you take your time getting to the top! Don’t worry – the drop in reputation isn’t permanent, and by the time you get your reputation back up, no one will remember your shady activities!
Although the game does have a plot, it is completely up to you as to whether you participate in it. Unlike other battle simulation games, you don’t report to a superior, or are forced into mission after mission – Autoduel is complete freedom to do as you choose!
