Blood was released in 1997 by Monolith Games. It was one of the last first-person shooters to use 2D sprites for all of its visuals, which some may think make it a game which should've been released 2-3 years earlier. But like other classics like 'Duke Nukem 3D' and 'Shadow Warrior", this game is still considered one of the best of it's time.
The monsters are well balanced throughout the levels, and are cleverly placed. For example, gargoyle statues being placed on either side of a castle, spring out into life once the player has moved past them.
Or a zombie with a butcher knife guarding a kitchen. The monsters still looked pretty good for their time, and pack quite a punch if not dealt with quickly!
The weapons in Blood are all very useful, some more than others.
Blood is well-known for its great levels, and how they link throughout each "START" and "EXIT". The design is fantastic, and the music really matches the area in which you’re playing. The levels are very creative, using real-life situations like Carnivals and Mansions, and making them into creepy fortresses.
The main thing you'll notice about Blood is that it sticks to its title. There is A LOT OF BLOOD! More Blood than Doom or Duke Nukem, or most shooters released previously. Even a couple of bullets
from Caleb's Tommy Gun will still make a big mess, but a well timed Napalm Launcher will tear apart your enemies.
I first played this game on a Windows 95 system, and even now, Blood is still very fun for a quick play.
Blood, overall, is one of my favorite classic shooters of all time! I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed games like 'Doom' and 'Rise of the Triad'. If you like old fps games, and you haven't already given this a shot., do it now!
