Cops and Robbers was the first game that I ever played on any console. I remember rushing home from school to beat my brothers onto the old commodore 64, loading it up and playing for hours. Still to this day I love playing the old school games. The game in itself is an original and a classic, still to this day there are few games if any I have ever seen like it.
Cops & Robbers take on the overhead two dimensional view keeping the majority of the playing screen in view, making it easier to see not only where you are but what is around you and coming towards you.
The game begins in the public street where you may enter a small selection of locations such as the bank, police station and the old mine. As you progress through the game you will find yourself in a variety of maze like stages with the police following set patterns and some homing in on you. Many of the stages have secret areas and can sometimes be quite a challenge especially if you have gone there to early or are missing a tool. I like the variety the game throws at you by putting you in the dark (until you find the torch), finding helpful objects and weapon upgrades as well as traps set by the police. Throughout the game you must
find keys to open locked doors and progress. As you go through the stages / world your main objective as the robber is to steal diamonds and avoid being arrested although it is not the end all. The game is enjoyable on all levels and can be appreciated by any age. The graphics although simple are detailed enough to give a good concept of the overall game. As far as Commodore 64 games go this has to be in the top 50.
The sounds are played on the midi system and provide all of the necessary sound effects to gain a concept of what you are doing, i.e. shooting, going up and down elevators. The controls are simple and easy to use with up, down, left, right, and shoot. The controls are played on the keyboard with the F1 to F12 being different difficulty levels.
I recommend this game to any serious game collector as its timeless theme and variable speed options make this game enjoyable and fun time after time. If you want a great game for the family or just yourself, this is it. Enjoy!
