Game Review (written by Taskr36) Added on: 01/07/2007
Ok, so I’m the first to review this game. I’m sure most people have never heard of it, but this was one of my favorite games as a kid. The story as I remember it is that you found this machine, The Eidolon, in a laboratory belonging to a professor you know. The professor disappeared so naturally the best thing for you to do is jump in this dusty machine and see what it can do.
The machine transported you to a maze of caves and you must now find your way out. Along the way you will meet a large variety of bizarre monsters. Some are nearly harmless, while others are extremely deadly. They will follow and attack you if they spot you.
The Eidolon is equipped with cannons capable of shooting four different types of fireballs at monsters. Some monsters are only vulnerable to certain types of fire and some may even turn into different monsters when you attack them. In order to keep your machine powered you must also find fireballs in the caves and collect them. If you get in their way and don’t collect them fast enough your vehicle may be struck and sustain damage so be quick.
To complete a stage you must collect diamonds that are guarded by monsters in the caves. You then use those diamonds to get past force-fields and face the dragons that guard each level. Dragons are especially difficult because you must determine which method of attack to use and simultaneously absorb the fireballs they breathe. On some levels you may even face multi-headed dragons that require a different method of attack for each head.
The booklet for this game included a little journal from the professor detailing what he’d learned of the caves and some of the monsters he encountered. Since he obviously never returned from his last trip the journal is incomplete and will only help you at the lower levels.
The story is solid, and with the journal you can truly feel immersed in the game. The graphics are definitely good for what the old Commodore 64 was capable of. The gameplay was smooth and fun, with you traveling through caves using directionals or a joystick, pressing spacebar to collect fireballs, and pressing number keys one through four to fire on your enemies with whichever attack was necessary to defeat them.
Try this game. If you are a fan of oldies, this game will not disappoint you.
