Game Review (written by Rainzee) Added on: 12/09/2006
For all the fans of classic Commodore 64 games and in particular martial arts games this is one of the very best in my opinion. From the very beginning the game delivers outstanding audio and great graphics with the title screen delivering a fantastic “HAAiiiiiYYYYAAAARRR PFFFCCRRRTTT OOOOWWWWWW!!!” – a sound effect that really sets the tone for this action-packed game (it really is quite hilarious actually, it makes me laugh). One player can battle a computer opponent or two players can battle it out against each other.
The game is actually quite similar to another popular title and excellent game called International Karate but there are some obvious differences. The moves are executed in much the same way using the joystick in a directional manner combined with the fire button, the attacks include: Head punch, solar-plexus punch, abdominal punch, head kick, body kick, knee kick, foot kick (sweep), round-house kick and the jumping fly kick.
Something that really stands out in this game is the sound effects that have been put into it, they really are very distinctive and sound a lot like the classic sounds you hear in those old martial arts movies, it’s fantastic - and the music also is excellent, something that adds a great deal of authenticity and originality to this game. The graphics are very well done too - setting you at the shore of an island of the orient, where the waves gently caress the rocks of the sea shore and small flocks of birds seek refuge from the impending night as a fiercely red sun sets over the calm blue ocean... As a whole this is a great piece of C64 gaming history, in the genre of martial arts games, one of the very best. The name Exploding Fist is a powerful notion, and this game delivers outstanding audio/visual performance with excellent playability.
It really is a superbly made piece of gaming history, I already have and will continue to recommend this game to people – being an 80’s child and growing up watching Bruce Lee movies and the likes, one can really appreciate the simplicity, and also the flawlessness of a game of this time. I really hope you check this one out, it’s simple, and it’s brilliant.
Although I no longer have my Commodore 64 I am really happy to have come across the C64 emulator and in particular this site which offers so many classic games for download, it’s just brilliant! Thanks a heap!
