Karateka

Game Review (written by Chrissi) Added on: 01/02/2008
Princess Mariko has been captured from the fortress of Akuma, and it is now your job to rescue this beautiful lady. In Karateka the player will be combating against many different characters that surround the castle in attempt to rescue Princess Mariko.
The two players will be seen on the usual side scrolling aspect displaying your surrounding. Each player will be able to perform several different kicks and punches with a total of three levels of contact heights. There isn’t a large amount of moves that you will be capable of doing, but enough to get the job done.
On the bottom of the screen you will see yours and your opponent’s health. This makes the combat completion a little simpler since you can how much it will take to defeat your opponent. To win the combat you will have to have health points left and your opponent left with none.
There is so much to look out for during your travels through the castle that may make the game a little challenging to stay on task. At the beginning you may discover you are starting over a few times, but once you get the hang of the game you won’t be doing this anymore.
The graphics have been done in your usual arcade design with amazing motion animation done to your character and your opponents. The

entire game is put together so well that everything is going through smoothly and efficiently.
Side scrolling combat simulations has been quite popular over the years. Karateka was an astounding addition to this version of games. If you want to take on a game that isn’t too difficult and not too long, but can’t decide on what one to choose, Karateka would be the perfect selection. The game has an adventurous feel while you are taking on your travels throughout the fortress of Akuma, and a sensational combat design that you will fall in love with right away. Take your chances and complete one of the best games designed in centuries. I highly recommend downloading it immediately!

I loved Karateka too. I thought it was difficult and kind of moved slowly. But I always thought the graphics were decent and the game was mysterious. I think I only beat it after I watch a walkthrough recently.

Karateka is an absolutely amazing game. I'd rather play Karateka than those fancy looking fighting games that require tons of graphics card memory and don't give me the feeling.

I used to play Karateka years ago in the early 90's when we used to call the ice-cream man over through the window and then watch him look for us while we hid. We would play it on hot summer holidays when it was too hot to play outside. It kept us occupied for ages, frustrating us when we couldn't get past that stupid bird! Still frustrates me today!

Karateka was one of the best martial arts games created in its day. For those of us in the gaming community accustomed only to PC and console gaming, this game may look slow, pixelated, and boring. However, considering that this game came out on the Commodore 64 only two years after Star League Baseball (one of my personal favs for the C64), the visual appeal and realism were astonishing for a 64K system. Originally published for the Apple II, this game was more widely played on the Commodore systems. Created by Jordan Michener for Broderbund Software (the same people who made Lode Runner), this game was published in head-to-head competition with another up-and-coming Commodore-heavy game company, Epyx, and their World Karate Championship - another excellent game for it's day. The premise of Karateka is simple: fight a LOT of creatively-costumed enemies one by one and one-on-one in the hopes of rescuing princess Mariko from the evil samurai warlord and karateka master Akuma. The simplicity of this game is perhaps its biggest asset. There are no puzzles to solve, bosses to fight (until the end), or quirks to throw you off your game. Survive and advance is the rule of the day here and considering the fact that your lives are, shall we say, extremely limited, I'd suggest you win and win quickly. The gameplay is actually quite simple: a low, middle, and high version of both kick and punch. That's it. Yep. Six moves. These moves must be carefully calculated too since you can typically string together up to 3 of them at a time and you'll basically be able to input them through the joystick before the first move is even completed. Your enemies will ALWAYS come from the right side of the screen and will be waiting in predictably regular intervals. Be careful not to be in run mode when you approach or they will take health away quickly. There is no need to backtrack, no climbing, no jumping, and no additional weapons or upgrades. The only curveballs you'll encounter in this game come near the end of the game. As you enter the fortress section where the princess is kept. you will occasionally encounter Akuma's fighting hawk who approaches on either the low, middle, or high portion of your body. It will only take one successful attack landed perfectly to scare the bird away, but that attack must be perfectly timed so I suggest that you get practiced at punching since this attack, though still painfully slow, is quite a bit faster than kicking. Be prepared for a more extended visit from this bird near the end too, but I won't spoil the surprise. The second curve is Akuma himself who is not only bigger, faster, and has a longer reach than our hero, but also is, GASP, better looking?! Yeah, this is one of the few circumstances in early gaming where the bad guy actually looks a LOT cooler than the hero. Should you make it past Akuma, the third curve awaits - and she has beautiful ones in the eyes of a 13 year old. I won't wreck the surprise, but please make sure you are not in a fighting stance when you approach her - unless you've beaten the game 33 times and are just curious. Overall, I would have given Karateka a 11 out of 10 back in 1986, although now it would probably garner only a 4 from the fast-twitch XBOX and PS2/3 crowd. I love this game, take a chance a try it out!

Karateka was one of the frst fighting games for personal computer systems (it had its first appearance in early Apple II systems). It's a 3rd-person fight game created by Jordan Mechner. You're a trained master Karateka and have to rescue the princess Mariko from the evil Akuma, who lives in a castle, well-guarded by inumerous fighters.
