Legacy of the Ancients was a Christmas present for me, and I can remember playing for hours on end all that winter. It is a FUN, well-balanced RPG that has elements of dungeon diving, arcade games, quests, and some puzzle solving all wrapped around an exciting storyline that seems alive. It captivated my interest enough that I've actually played through the game now 3 different times (2 being on a commodore emulator).
My favorite thing about this game is how you increase your in-game stats by playing two different arcade games.

My favorite thing about this game is how you increase your in-game stats by playing two different arcade games. For dexterity and stamina you get to play a game that tests your own reflexes. I often amazed people at the sheer speed of my armor deflecting capabilities on level 7!
You just have to play it if you don't know what I'm talking about. Then, later in the game you can increase your wisdom stats by playing the "Stones of Wisdom" game. Stones of Wisdom is a strategic game that is actually quite fun and worthy of playing even outside of Legacy. In fact, once learned you could teach some friends how to play.
Legacy of the Ancients was a graphically rich, engrossing RPG that had some great sound effects throughout the entire game. The Ta-Da sound when you did something good, the cheery victory sounds when you advanced levels and solved major issues... cash registers, battle sounds and of course my favorite - the squish you made while walking in the swamps of the outlands.
If you're looking for a great old-school CRPG to play for the C64, look no further. Easy to get into, you don't have to memorize spell lists or learn complex commands... just start playing and the game prompts you all throughout. You can even just use the keyboard to type selections instead of having to use the joystick the entire time.
Grab this game and get yourself immersed into the story. Feel what its like to be beaten up on and have your magic compendium stolen. Try to figure out why the healers start disappearing. Who is this mysterious caretaker? Can you find the four jewels and help stop the evil wizard from using the magic compendium to enslave the world?
If you do all that... well then you can move on to the sequel of Legacy of the Ancients -- The Legend of Black silver!
