This is one of the first games I ever played, and it is still one of the greatest adventure games ever made. The sequel from Tim Scheffer known as Day Of The Tentacle is just as amazing, but Maniac Mansion still tops. Really one of the first adventure games to venture out of the text-based world and the grandfather of the point and click. Click on an action word then click on the item and your avatar will do it (i.e. click "open" then "door" and the door will be opened (fancy that!!!)
In THIS point and click (well, arrow over and spacebar) adventure, you (Dave) and two of your friends enter a Mansion (a la "Rocky Horror") and try to save your girlfriend.

on which 2 of your 7 friends you pick, you can have a wholly different experience and direction you have to go (replayability!!!). Each member of the team has strengths that you must utilize in order to save Sandy and escape yourselves. You switch between the three on the fly in order to solve puzzles that require precise timing and skill.
You'll have to dodge the sex crazed Nurse Edna, the Mad Doctor, Ed, the Purple Tentacle, and ultimately the alien meteor that has possessed them all. Add radioactive water to the plant and access new areas, befriend the Green Tentacle and use his band's music to shatter the chandelier and get the key, and breathe heavily into Edna's phone to distract her.
The graphics are outdated now (VERY blocky), but at the time were top notch. The musical score is creative and catchy. It takes lots of time to solve some of the puzzles, especially if you get caught and thrown in the dungeon (which you can escape from...). It's difficult to get into a particular situation that you absolutely can't get out of, but timing is everything. Have one kid ready to go into Ed's room while another rings the doorbell to bring him outside.
Simple in mechanics, but odd ball puzzles and outrageous humor abound in this early Lucas Arts adventure that will suck hours of your life. A definite must-play for any gamer!!! If you end up liking this one, try Day Of The Tentacle, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango (the best adventure game EVER). Though not exactly the same style of game, Psychonauts for the PC, PS2, and Xbox features a similar humor and ingenuity, just in a 3-D platformer.
