Game Review (written by Arcticfox7uk) Added on: 02/19/2008
This classic wireframe adventure puts you in the shoes of a Mercenary who, due to their ship breaking down, has become stuck on a distant planet. Your task is to make enough money to get off-world and fortunately the two resident factions (the Palyars and the Mechanoids) provide payment for services given. These tasks involve finding items in the network of tunnels and hangars under the surface and taking them to appropriate rooms in either factions base.
The game world itself was huge for its day and each location on the grid like surface is decorated by a huge wireframe building such as a Radio Mast, Chapel, Hangar, Stadium, etc. Beg, borrow or steal an aircraft and suddenly visiting these locations takes on a whole new dimension... for example, just keep flying towards that star in the sky and you may be in for a surprise.
All of the ground structures can be destroyed with a well placed shot and will come crashing down in a shower of white lines but watch out for the Law. Police Darts will shoot on sight if you attack the buildings but they can be out flown and shot down if you are determined enough. Your character is indestructible, but if you take a hit while still inside your aircraft, it will be destroyed and you may have a painfully long and slow trek to find another one.
Despite the use of wireframe graphics, When navigating by foot, the pace of this game is very s-l-o-w to say the least and there are moments when traveling through long corridors you'll think time is standing still. However, it soon becomes clear that this is deliberately done to maintain the perspective as once in the air, the handling is fast and smooth and it becomes second nature to swoop and maneuver through the structures or dogfight with the police darts.
I loved this game as there were little nuggets of humor hidden in among the tasks. Just try destroying the authors advertising board or shooting your own computer logo to receive a torrent of abuse. Given the size of the game world and the length of time it takes to complete the tasks needed to escape, the ultimate outcome (complete with countdown to launch) is pretty satisfying. As you blast off for another world you can reflect on a job well done.
