Midway was one of the first computer games I ever played. The Avalon Hill Game Company produced it in 1980.
Midway is an entirely text base game. There is a map of the area, of midway, but all island and fleet icons are represented by text. For instance, land is represented by an asterisk (*).
Midway recreates the Battle of Midway fought between American Naval Forces and the Imperial Japanese Navy in June 1942.
Even though the game is text based it is really great.
It has been so long ago that I played it, but I’m pretty sure, the computer could only play the Japanese. As the Americans you have to move your two carrier task forces around the map and try to spot the Japanese before they spot you. It is really a very suspenseful game of cat and mouse. Once the enemy has been spotted, you can launch your squadrons of Grumman F4F Wildcats, TBF Avengers, and SBD Dauntless dive-bombers. Your planes have to destroy the Japanese combat air patrol before it’ll attack you.
I spent many hours playing this game in the early 80’s.
For a text based game, Midway packs a lot of suspense. If you are a real fan of this genre, you’ll like it.
