Paper Boy is a great arcade game where you will be taking the role as a paperboy doing deliveries of newspapers in a suburban area on your bicycle. You will attempt to deliver a week of daily papers to your customers, vandalizing the non-subscribers houses, and avoid the numerous hazards on the streets. You will loose subscribers is you miss a delivery or you commit damage to their home. There is the ability to recover your subscribers by a perfect day of deliveries.
There are three levels of difficult that are in the game.
These difficulty levels are easy street, middle road, and hard way. Each varies a little bit more in the objects on the streets, which cause you to screw up your route. Your main goal of the game is to have a perfect deliver week without any crashes, which will take one of your lives if you do encounter with an object before your delivery week ends. Each week consists of seven days, which are of course Monday through Sunday. As the week progress each day will become more difficult, Sunday being the hardest day of the week since the papers are very heavy and you are not able to carry nearly as many as you could on Monday.
At the beginning of each
day you will be shown an overview of your route stating whom your subscribers and non-subscribers are. There is a way to differ the two apart when you are on your delivery, but you still should keep your eyes open. You will control how fast you go as well. The faster you go the higher your points will be. The paperboy is suppose to be moving non stop till the end of the day, if you do accidentally slow down or stop just for a few seconds you will be bombarded by bees, so you best get moving.
There are two main objectives for the entire game, keep your subscribers while staying alive and vandalizing non-subscribers’ places as well as hitting nuisances with your newspapers. Most wouldn’t of expected the vandalizing when they first start playing this game to be a good thing to do, but why not? Not like they are on your route. If you want to gain some extra bonus points, deliver the paper right to their mailbox, this is like getting your brownie points. One feature that can be a little frustrating is the fact you are going to have to pick up bundles which can some times be quite difficult to get too, but this allows you to keep up with your deliveries and not loose those well needed subscribers.
The graphics that go along with Paperboy are quite superb. The animation isn’t choppy and the details placed into this game make this game phenomenal. Paperboy does have the well-known arcade like graphics but with a little more added onto it. Overall everything visually has been done with a lot of thought and careful techniques.
