Game Review (written by Theykilledkenny) Added on: 12/03/2006
Pinball Construction Set is one of the most classic games for the commodore 64. I have spent hundreds of hours and missed many homework assignments as a result of playing this game during my childhood. Despite its antiquity, it remains to be a realistic game that promotes creativity and makes a great challenge.
The age of this game may seem surprising, but Pinball Construction Set was made in the time when games for the commodore were limited by their graphics, and were sold on the merits of their realism.
In the era where the pinball machines are being phased out since the advent of 3D games where you can rip out opponents eyeballs with a machine gun or some bizarre mutated atomic meat-slicer from the planet Zorg; the non-assuming pinball machine seems like a bore to most attention deficient adolescents.
This game has all of the classic pinball construction components such as ramps, bumpers, flippers, etc. It also gives you a huge ‘playing field’ to play on so that you can create pinball machines with two or three levels. You can take the pinball features you like the best, like ramps or bumpers; and then overuse them so that you get sick of them. After playing around for a while you will be surprised as to how challenging a pinball machines is to make and will have a newly found appreciation for the physical, mechanical behemoths that used to dominate the arcades of yesteryear.
One great way to have fun is to play with a child. My father and I used to take turns creating the pinball machine using Pinball Construction Set; placing a few components down, switching off, until the machine is complete. Once completed, we would compete to see who could get the highest score on said machine. We would then continue this operation from time to time, challenging each other to make the machine more difficult and confounding. I recommend you attempt this since construction games are a fun way to get the creative juices going as a sims game or tycoon game does, but at a more rudimentary level.
I recommend Pinball Construction Set to anyone who is looking for a time waster which is not as much a waste of time as it appears. Who knows, the pinball machine might come back, and they may need a pinball designer to help them launch their new vision.
