Game Review 1 (written by Macguidwin) Added on: 11/20/2006
I love this game! Sim City is the classic urban planning simulation. I started playing this game when I was in elementary school and today I am studying very similar concepts in zoning laws and property theory in law school.
Sim City allows for you to control all aspects of your city. Start by transforming the terrain to build rivers, lakes, islands, or mountains in the area on which your city will sit. Then, build your city by zoning land for residential, commercial, or industrial purposes.
Give your sims utilities by building power plants and water plants, and services by building schools, fire stations, and police stations. Play is challenging, as you must operate on a city budget, which is driven by tax revenues and service expenditures. To be successful, you must listen to your residents and industry partners to ensure that your city grows and flourishes. Also, watch out for natural disasters! Fires, tornados, and monsters can attack your city at any time and they may turn your city on its head.
While this original version of Sim City does not have all of the elaborate details of the later versions by Maxis games, the elegant simplicity of this version of Sim City rings true. The designers of this game incorporated all of the

major facets of city management and most of the later revisions were superfluous anyway. Later versions introduced scenarios, more robust graphics, additional services, neighbouring city options, and more disasters - however, they all stayed true to the same core gameplay, which is embodied by this original version. Thus, the strategy is the same here as you will find in any current game.
All in all, this is a must-have game for Sim City vetrans and rookies alike. Almost everyone has played this game at some point in their lives, and unlike many other games, the gameplay of Sim City is always different depending on the choices that you make in the course of your city's history. The hallmark of a great game to me is one, that can consume hours of your time without you even realizing it. This is certainly that game and is definitely worth a try!

This is the Sim City that started it all. In this version, the only utility that you need to worry about is electricity. The main treat of the game is its simplicity. The graphics are poor compared to today's high quality Sim games, but the amount of creative levity that you are allowed makes up for it.
You have your choice of several scenarios that provide for interesting challenges, ranging from spicing up the dull Dullsville to stopping a Godzilla like monster from destroying Tokyo. The challenge cities are by far my favorites. If you are a fan of cheat codes, you will be able to let your creative juices flow as freely as you choose. If not, be prepared for a great challenge.
If you are not interested in scenarios, you have a variety of ways in which to challenge yourself and your creativity. I particularly enjoy starting over again and again until I would get the layout that I wanted - I always wanted an island big enough to put a nuclear power plant. This is extremely helpful in the event of a meltdown and it also cuts down on pollution since it will be in an area that is not populated by city folk. If you do not want to wait for your preferred layout, just take the first available, noting that it will be a much greater challenge. TIP: Turn off the disasters before you start so that you have a chance at completing your city before it is destroyed.
This Sim City is a lot different than its followers. To me, these differences are welcome. Instead of laying out large sections of blue, yellow, orange, red, or green, you choose your industry, airport, et cetera and they come in pre packaged sizes. I feel that this is easier to power and also easier to get fire or police support to than in the later editions. While game playing quality is less important that fast paced three dimensional graphics to some people, those gamers who pleasure themselves with strategy and having to think will enjoy this Sim City more than the later ones.
Even if you think that you would not enjoy this game, take the time and give it a chance. If anything, look at the rendition of Godzilla attacking Tokyo from a DOS perspective. The laugh will be totally worth it.
