Game Review (written by Jeremyearle5) Added on: 10/15/2006
Ulysses and the Golden Fleece is pretty much a text game with graphics. Much like the games Shadow Gate and DejaVu for the NES.
You are Ulysses and of course you are searching for the Golden Fleece. On the noble quest, you will need but one magical weapon a thesaurus. You may become quite frustrated searching for just the right word to accomplish a minor task. Example: You see a coin lying on the ground. Command - (you type) grab coin (game responds) does not understand. Command- pick up coin does not understand. Command - take coin does not understand. Command - get coin. You pick up the coin. Woohoo! That was one small success, but trust me there will be many more frustrating times when you attempt every possible form of a verb in the English language and you end up never doing what you set out to do or even if it is possible to do it. A command list would probably have come in very handy.
I have not currently made it out of the beginning city which is in ancient Greece. You move about mostly using the north, south, east, west directions. The only I have actually found to do in this town is, believe it or not, pick up a coin. Oh, and I did climb a fence which I thought might have been a major accomplishment but it turns out that I could have just used the door.
I have been much further than this first town, but it was when I was younger and had much more patience. It was quite an adventure to set out to sea. You will run into sirens, Cyclops, and harpies.
I‘ve been critical of the game so you will be prepared for the challenge you will face. If you have the patience it is very rewarding once you find that exact right phrase that gets you in to see the king. You will feel like a genius. So if you are patient and like text type games I highly recommend Ulysses and the Golden Fleece.
