Game Review (written by Dingharlio) Added on: 05/21/2007
Wings is one of the best early flying games created. Many hours of my childhood were lost to this game but I still crave to play it. Set in World War 1 you even get to face off against the Red Baron, if you can make it that far. The graphics are quite good for their time and the simplicity of the flight controls make for good flying game. Beating this game will take several days and your utmost concentration. Definitely worth a shot if you’re into vintage flying games. For anyone who used to own the old Amiga system, this game was definitely among their list of top games.
Playing it recently I found it was much more difficult that I had remembered back in the day. The weaknesses of this game include the repetitiveness of the music and the long loading times, but back in the day it was the best out there! This is a much sought after game and will make a great addition to any classic game collection.
There are a lot of challenging aspects of the game including gun jams, anti aircraft fire and real time damage (however in a predictable fashion) to your plane. Earn your way up the ranks to become an ace pilot and prove that you can survive the war, that’s if indeed you can.
You will first have to start off with almost no flying skill and have to earn your wings and prove your worthiness to fly in battle. This game is known to cause neck cramps if you play it too much, I still haven’t found any modern games that match this game in terms of gameplay. Sid Meir's Pirates was a good classic remake. Maybe it is time to bring back wings with the modern graphics and gameplay engines of today’s games.
Simplicity of flying yet the complexity of the battle makes this game the great game it was. Just be sure to save your progress or one bad mission and game over. You have to start over and earn your wings again unless you wanna be Waldo P Barnstormer. You can input any pilot name and track your progress throughout the game.
Missions include dog fighting missions, strafing missions, bombing runs and balloon shooting missions. Certainly for its time you have to give this game a lot of respect and if you’re into flying games and haven’t tried it yet you definitely should try to get your hands on this gem.
