Game Review (written by Chrissi) Added on: 01/01/2008
Ikegami Tsushinki and Sega both released the game Zaxon in the year of 1982. During this game the player will get to fly a fighter craft. You will be flying this fighter craft throughout the fortress attempting to shoot your enemies that you encounter with several different weapons of choice.
The games objective is to come into contact with as many targets that have been spread out through the game that you can possibly can without getting shot down or have your fighter craft run out of petrol. If you discover your petrol getting low take your fighter craft to the nearest fuel drum and shoot at it. This will then replenish your petrol supply.
When the game was released in 1982 it was the first game to ever have the perspective of an isometric projection. This allowed the game to be a third dimensional graphical game, which was awesome for 1982 arcade games.
You will be trying to destruct the defense system in Zaxon before it is too late. With a total of three different stages you will get to experience the Asteroid City that has been heavily protected by air defense, guns, and many missiles. You will discover quickly that many areas throughout this stage have barriers that are alarmed making it that you will have to quickly get through these barriers. In stage two you will be in out space combating against loads of enemy air defense, which consist of any of the enemies that you missed in stage one. The last stage is the final battle with Zaxon. When you have completed this game will loop back to the beginning, but be on a higher difficulty level, having a total of three different skill levels to accomplish.
Zaxon was a great addition to the world of shooter games. Instead of your usual side scrolling game, the isometric perspective made this game even more popular to the fans of shooter games. With the abilities to determine the height of your enemy defense just by the shadow placed under them, you will have a better chance at shooting them once you get up or down to the same level of altitude.
Zaxon was definitely different compared to other space shooter games, which made it even more appealing to most gamers. Even though it took some time to get use to the controls all over again, this was a fantastic learning experience for gamers of the future. Make your own little competitions and compete against others to see who can get the highest scores; this can make the game even more enjoyable than what it already is. I highly recommend it to everyone!
