Game Review (written by Chrissi) Added on: 01/01/2008
The second game part of the Zork trilogy would be Zork II: The Wizard of Frobozz, which is another interactive fiction game, published in 1981. The game starts off where Zork I ended and will lead to the beginning of Zork III.
At the beginning of this game you will have a brass lantern and a sword. These will be the two weapons you begin with. Right at the beginning what is expected of you isn’t initially stated.
A little bit into the game you will finally meet the Wizard of Frobozz who is a very respected enchanter who recently started loosing some of his powers and was sent to Dimwit Flathead. As the player you will travel to the wizard’s realm and learn his magic.
Just like the first Zork in the trilogy you will still be experiencing a type of treasure hunt. This game will have all the treasure items that you are searching for though a little more tied together with a plot. Instead of finding all the treasures and the game ending, you will have to determine what to use each of the ten treasures for before you will reach the finale of the game. Not every single one of the treasures are actually needed to complete the game, but it’s best to collect them all since you don’t know exactly which ones you don’t need.
There will be twelve different spells that are used more often during the game than the seven special spells. Several of the first twelve spells consist of, fear, filch, fireproof, float, and eight more other than those four. These spells will all have an effect on the target you are taking on, some being comical, others just being down right awesome. Then there are the seven different special spells that you won’t see used as often as the first twelve. There are three of these spells that will all do very similar things, these spells consist of Frobizz, frobozzle, and frobnoid. When the wizard himself has cast these spells near the end of the game when you are unable to control the demon. If you as the player request any of these three spells the wizard will die.
During the game you will still be completing some mere impossible puzzles just like Zork I, except the game takes on the plot a little more than the first game in the trilogy. With this trilogy being a continuation of each other, there is no doubt they are all going to be just as good as the next. Time to take on one of the best trilogies ever created and begin this phenomenal action fantasy adventure.
