Game Review (written by Darryl978xx) Added on: 05/04/2007 Magic Polalamin is a quirky entertaining arcade shoot em up that has a cartoony anime style to it. You play a little girl on a broom who advances through several different levels, shooting up all sorts of creatures and things from different sources of anime before fighting a gigantic boss, usually a popular character from an (of course) anime.
The graphics are bright and appealing. Each level you scroll through has its own image file which slowly scrolls upward until you reach the end of the level. Attacks are bright and colorful, and updated you can fill up the screen with waves and waves of flashy attacks.
What is unfortunate about the game is in between every intermission of a level, your character engages in talking to another character (if you can read Japanese, hopefully you can figure out what they're saying) and then you see an image of them, exposing themselves... hentai, basically. Not only is it in poor taste, it's censored and doesn't fit in well with the rest of the game. You just spent several minutes shooting up a gigantic Doreamon only to see some girl in a nurse outfit without her panties on?
Fortunately, all the graphics are more or less customizable/replaceable, since they're all right there to edit. This can also mean you can essentially create your very own shooter with whatever graphics you can create or find. This can make Magic Polalamin into Magic Aviation Blaster, or something of the sort.
The music is lively and happy, and the sound effects are very cutesy. They are pretty ambient which, is appropriate for the kind of game this is. Not much to say there, but if you like Japanese music and sound effects, then you shouldn't have any problem with it. Then again, you shouldn't be playing if you don't like anything anime to begin with.
Gameplay is standard if you have played any other shoot em up games. You shoot, collect power-ups, kill enemies, and fight bosses and advance onward. The majority of the game is very easy. Once you power up your weapon to the higher levels and continue to shoot endless waves of attacks, your chance of dying is very low. Bosses are more difficult, especially as you progress onward into the game. They take a long time to kill, some have several parts, and take up a large portion of the screen. You'll probably lose several lives trying to defeat them.
Overall, Magic Polalamin is a fun shoot em up that is perfect for fans of anime. The only distasteful thing about it is the adult part, but that can easily be fixed by replacing those images with your own.
