Game Review (written by Juggalomalice) Added on: 09/03/2006 Superior to its predecessor in almost everyway, Metal & Lace 2 does away with the RPG and shopping elements of the first game and becomes a full fledge fighting game. The game has been overhauled in almost everyway from its visual ascetics, sound quality, and a storyline for each playable character that you can read once you finish the game as them. (Which unfortunately most people will never be able to read unless you can read Japanese and your system can support the character code.) Still even with the lack of a storyline the game is very fun.
The controls are relatively easy to learn and are very similar to most fighting games. A great enhancement from the bulky and unresponsive controls of the first game, it even boosts a two-player mode that can double as a training mode to learn special moves and attacks. It is highly recommended that you spend at least a few rounds of fighting in here to learn a characters attacks and fighting style. Especially since each character has at least several special attacks and “Super” moves that can be performed when there power gauge (the small bar under your life) is filled up. There is even a useful charge command that you can use to charge up this bar and with some well timed charges in a fight it can very well be the determining factor between victory and defeat. For those of you who don’t want to go through the trial and error of learning attacks you can always look up a move list on one of the many game FAQ sites.
The new soundtrack of the game is rather catchy and greatly improves the mood of the game. The graphics in combat mode will seem somewhat nostalgic to those of us who grew up with the old SNES. Characters movements are relatively smooth and bright. Special attacks can raise feelings of awe at the use of animation and colors or sometimes discontent when an attack seems lacking in both visuals and tactical use. Backgrounds are very beautiful and well made. Unfortunately they can be somewhat boring and lacking in animation and interactivity. Another nice little feature is the ability to change your characters colors depending on which button you press at the selection screen. With bright character colors and rather rich detail for its day the graphics are nothing to be truly disappointed about.
Unfortunately this game has almost no replay value. If you have a system that allows you to read the character endings it may be a slightly different story, but for most of us the short story dialogues at the end won’t be worth playing the game again. There is a hidden character that you can unlock after you play the game several times or so, but not much after that. Once you unlock all the girls h-scenes there’s really no reason to keep playing this game.
Over all this game is fun, easy, and fast. Good to keep you entertained for a bit, but offers nothing that you haven’t seen anywhere else to keep you entertained for long!
