Game Review (written by Manganate) Added on: 07/26/2008
For those of you who are fans of Sailor Moon or who even only possessed a cursory knowledge of the popular anime series, this game is for you. The gameplay follows a simple Mahjong sixteen tile format (which is ridiculously easy to win once you understand the rules) and the images are surprisingly crisp and sharp for a game of this era. It’s almost impossible to overstate how enjoyable this game was as it brought back memories of a time as a younger boy overcome with hormones was infatuated with the Sailor Scouts, their mini-skirts, and their almost comically perfect bodies. This game obviously capitalized on an era when anime was still considered a fringe trend in the United States. I remember coming home from school and watching Sailor Moon and the three different Dragon Ball series on television and nothing else as these were really the only anime series on mainstream television for a long while, but they still managed to capture the imagination of soon to be otakus everywhere.
My personal favourite from this game is without a doubt the sultry Sailor Mars, her dark hair and fiery passionate personality from the anime brought to life in this great fantasy interpretation. There are however, shortcomings, as the game doesn’t develop the personalities of the different scouts as much as it should. Beyond their different looks, it would be more challenging for a casual player to differentiate between the characters, especially without some background knowledge of the anime itself. This is however, easily overlooked as the game was not developed for an audience of lay-people but rather a very avid fan base of one of the most famous anime and manga series of all time. The irony, if you can call it that, is that the game reduces the characters of the anime to simple visual objects of sexual titillation, when the purpose of the series was quite progressively; the building up of strong female heroines in traditional male roles of saving the world and battling evil.
All commentary on the nature of the anime series that the game is based on aside, one could conceivably become very well versed in mahjong by simply playing the game. The rules are all the same as the way it is played in traditional Asian settings and it is extremely easy to learn even for those who have absolutely no background in the game (like me). Additionally once you get past the strange pronunciations of the different tile names it’s no more difficult remember to the 3 suits of mahjong than it is to know the four suits of traditional western cards.
