Game Review (written by Testem) Added on: 06/17/2008 The objective of SQUAREX is to capture all the grey squares on the game board by manoeuvring your yellow cube around them. The game starts with your yellow cube on the top left corner. Now, the challenging part comes when you are being timed to do this and, little by little, every 30 seconds or so, an orange cube appears in the bottom right corner. These orange cubes are chasing around the maze. If they touch you, you lose a life. You start the game with 4 lives or yellow cubes. Obviously, when you run out of cubes, the game ends.
You move by using the arrow keys. You leave a red trail everywhere you move to. Very similar to PacMan. Once you encircle one of the grey boxes, it turns green. So that you do not go over the same grey square again. Once you get them all, you have beaten the level. There are also some blue squares around, but they do not give any points at all.
Now, speaking of the movement, once you start moving along a path, you can not stop moving until you get to an intersection. At which point, you can then decide to move anywhere. On the other hand, the orange cubes can change direction any time, so do not get confident about it.
On various levels there are pink cubes located at different places along the passageways. The orange cubes that are chasing you can not go through these pink squares, so it helps sometimes.
Once again, similar to PacMan, when you get these pink cubes, the orange squares turn blue. At this point the roles are inverted and you can capture them for points, 100 actually. This is so for about 15 seconds. On most levels there is only one orange cube
At the beginning of each level there is a special grey box worth 100 points, so it is well worth going for it as the normal cubes are worth 25 points only. If you encircle another grey cube before this one, you will 'lose' the opportunity to get that extra bonus. You get bonus for finishing in good time. When you reach 2500 points you get into a special bonus round. In this special level, there are no grey boxes in the board but still, if you encircle the boxes, they would turn green as with the others. In this special level, there is a special cube that will give you an extra yellow cube.
The game overall is good, though not really too much to expect from it. Graphics are rather basic and gameplay is slow. Still if you are for simple challenges, this is the game for you.
