Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 04/12/2008 Super Angelo is a spin-off of the Super Mario Brothers games from the Super Nintendo and other Nintendo gaming systems. It was written by Dutch programmer Mike Wiering, who created many other shareware games, such as Super Worms, Charlie the Duck, and Mario. Super Angelo was actually created because Wiering was distressed over others having tweaked his version of Mario, a super parallax scrolling platform game, and were making profits from it. Out of that, Super Angelo was born.
Like its predecessors, Super Angelo features an Italian looking little character, similar to Super Mario or his brother Luigi. He runs and jumps his way across a horizontal scrolling platform screen, avoiding and occasionally jumping on enemies to dispatch of them. Some enemies are tougher and have to bounced on more than once in order to be killed, and some can be hit with the minor power up weapons that can be attained in the game. For the most part, however, Super Angelo does best to avoid the creatures, and concentrate on the jump and run strategy. At the end of every level, there is a boss character that often resembles a larger, more souped up version of the creatures he had been fighting in the levels leading up to the boss’s lair.
While it seems like all of the spin offs and clones of the Super Mario Brothers games, from the original to Mario Kart, feature cute, cartoonish graphics in engaging colors, the gamer will really notice this in Super Angelo. The graphics are a notch up and just a bit more detailed than the other games. The grasses seem to have an extra blade and an extra color. The pipes that Angelo has to negotiate (and sometimes descend to find secret levels and treasures) are bright and lively, sometimes featuring nifty little fringes. All in all, the game levels are well designed and attractive.
The game play is good. While it is repetitive like most platform games, it is still challenging and the precision jumping requirements make it something to think about instead of just breezing through. Of course, the main goal of the game is points, points, points, seconded only by the hope of getting just one platform farther than on the previous try. Mike Wiering did a nice job on this Mario inspired game. His games have become popular shareware and freeware offerings for an obvious reason, which will become instantly apparent as soon as you download this game and give it a go.

Phayte (04/16/2008) This game is essentially the same as mario bros. 3 or super mario world. For anyone who enjoys the side-scrolling gameplay that those games had to offer, I would recommend trying this game as well. As far as game play goes, it is basically the same as mario, jumping on bad guys to kill them as you make your way from one side of the level to the other. Although the story in this game is lacking, the levels can provide an interesting enough challenge |
