Apprentice was developed as freeware (the best kind of game) by Herculean Effort Productions. The game starts out with a dream sequence, which does not really play any part in the game. All it does is introduce you to the main character, Pib. In the dream he runs into a creepy guy named Lord Ironcrow, who is the ruler of the kingdom, who then tries to talk Pib into being a soldier for his army. However, Pib refuses and when he does, he wakes up screaming at the top of his lungs.

Pib is an apprentice wizard and has not gotten to prepare his first spell yet, so when his teacher comes in the room, he gets informed that today he will
get to do so. During the remainder of the game, you are on a hunt for all the ingredients so he can prepare his first spell. Apprentice is pretty much an amateur point and click adventure game. It does not have much of a storyline and was ridiculed for that and its shortness. It is set up to be a trilogy, so maybe the game play gets better in each part of the series.
If you look at the graphics on this game, it kind of looks like the creator was trying to make it look a little bit like a cartoon. I kind of like that quality because it makes things a bit more colorful. It has good sound and music for a small game of its time. This game is similar to that of Nintendo’s Zelda, only better graphics and not so annoying music. Some people have found that this game is not very interesting because of the lack of storyline and lack of entertainment value. The game is easy enough to play that any child with hand eye coordination can play it and enjoy it. Although it does not have much of a story line, it did win some awards of its own back in 2003 with AG Underground Awards. It won awards for best graphics, best sound/music, and best writing. Obviously somebody thought the game was worth voting for.
