Anyone else out there a diehard old school Lucas Arts/Sierra style adventure game fanatic? Well, here's to the good ol' days of Adventure and puzzle solving! This game is really only mediocre when placed next to golden age classics such as Lucas Art’s Indiana Jones Adventure Games, or Sierra’s Space Quest, Kings Quest, and Quest for Glory series, but it has some things that the others do not!
First of all, this game is quite recent and should run fine on standard Windows computers and does not need to be run using DOS box.
Second, it is freeware—it always has been and always will be—it has never been sold! It was made solely for the purpose of bringing back the good ol’ days, which if you are like me is reason enough to download it! And third, it outstrips many of the golden oldies in terms of graphics and sound.
This game was made with Chris Jones’ Adventure Game Studio, or AGS (see www.BigBlueCup.com) as were many more of the recently made freeware Adventure Games you will find out there.
Okay, so enough about all that, on to the game itself:
Basically this is the sequel to the first Apprentice game, and you still play as Pib from the first game and you go on another adventure in his attempt to achieve
Wizardhood and dodge the draft. The game has good graphics and a funny storyline. The puzzles are well paced and there are walkthroughs available for those of you who cannot finish an adventure game without one. It also features a good dose of humor that is absolutely essential to a good adventure game!
Well, I don’t want to give too much away, all I can say is that it is a good game and has won no less than 7 awards from the AGS community:
Best Game Created with AGS 2004
Best Dialogue Scripting 2004
Best Puzzles 2004
Best Room Art 2004
Best Character Art 2004
Best Animation 2004
Best Music 2004
So, overall, if you miss the old school but lack the patience for old computers, or just want a fresh new angle on the genre that still stays true to adventure gaming roots, then give Apprentice a try.
I do suggest that you download the first one as well though; it isn't as complete of a game as this one is, but it is still worth the download. Also if you liked this game you should check out Aprentice III: Checkmate!
So go ahead and click the download to get right back to that Lucas Arts style goodness!
