Game Review (written by Gershlack) Added on: 12/04/2008
This game is one of my old favorites. This is mainly because of the lore in this game (despite some things are not quite accurate). I personally really enjoyed playing this game, mainly because it was one of the few games of its time to use graphics. I got this game for my PC (it was also available for some other platforms) and it worked quite smoothly. I enjoyed how you had to collect chivalry, experience and wisdom to prove you could be a good king and I also enjoyed how you could transform into animals to give you that edge against your enemies in the game.
And in this game the advice Merlin gave to you was quite helpful and didn’t get irritating (unlike most games). It was a definite plus.

The game is very lore friendly and tends to stick with the main stream assumptions that surround Arthurian legend. (Though it was not for quite a few years before I decided to look at the real history). A good example of this is how you must find the sword Excalibur, which in the actual legends was not Excalibur, but is often confused with Excalibur by people unfamiliar with the legends.

These small matters, which I didn’t enjoy so much, are easily overlooked by the pure brilliance of the game and the way the developers packaged it. Infocom also packaged

with the game a copy of a Book of Hours, which explains the Canonical hours such as Matins, Lauds and Vespers. The book also contains a poem, lines of which are used as passwords in the game as a form of copy protection. It is a shame that the company Infocom closed down; these “bonus items” which you get with the game made it feel like the publishers were taking that extra step to make the game a little more enjoyable. It was also one of Infocom’s last games to include a difficilty rating; this was also a loss because it helped people find out if this game was catered for their preffered dificulty of play.

Overall this is a very enjoyable game to play and I would suggest it to fantasy lovers but people who are obsessed with all the facts might not enjoy this so much. I would highly recommend this game to all people, especially with its user-friendly interface and how addicted you will become with this awesome game.
