Game Review (written by Lindsay2) Added on: 11/25/2007
Bureaucracy by Infocom was created in 1987 and it is a basic text adventure game. It starts out about a man who lives in London and decides to move from one apartment to another. As like any other smart citizen, he dutifully fills out a change of address form at the post office. Then he takes in and makes sure to remember where everything is, from his new neighbours to where a branch of his bank is located. The man goes to a store and tries to use his credit card and it gets declined. He contacts his bank to find out why and the bank tells him that the card he has in his possession has been invalidated and they have sent him a new one.
There is a problem though. They send it to his old address. He does try for a few weeks to get his bank to acknowledge his change of address forms and ends up filling out more paperwork and they tell him he has to fly to Paris. He has no money until he gets his paycheck. Sounds pretty simple doesn’t it? Well, the poor guy runs into another problem. His paycheck was delivered to the wrong address thanks to the wonderful postal service.
The main object of the game is to track down his paycheck, cash it and take a well deserved vacation before he completely stresses out. When he finally tracks it down, he finds typos on it and there is a negative sign in front of the numbers. Some of the things that you will run into include getting hang up calls on your answering machine and having a waitress get your lunch order completely wrong. All of these things can stress somebody out very quickly.
There are no graphics on this game as it is a text only game. You have to type in your choice of actions. For example, to pick up a glass of water, you would type get glass or pick up glass. Even though you are travelling across town and in stores and an airport, there is no map that will show you where it is or where you are. It takes some patience to get through and a knowledge of verbs and adjectives, along with others. If you like text only games then I do recommend this game to you, but if you prefer graphics in your games, don’t bother with this one.
