Castle Adventure

Genre:  Adventure    |     Year: 1985    |     Publisher: Freeware     |     Developer: Keypunch
Game Review (written by Lindsay2) Added on: 11/29/2007
Castle Adventure came out in 1985 and is classified as an adventure game. It was actually originally released in 1982 and it is a dungeon crawl with a little back story. It is a fun text parser based game with mazes and adventures. Some people call it a most memorable ASCII game in the long lost BBS era. I just call it a basic text adventure game.
In this game you are supposed to collect all items, defeat the monsters and earn as many points as possible.
The perfect game score for this game is 1,550 points, although it is completely possible to finish with a slightly lower score. You have to use directional text commands to make the character move from place to place like move right or move left. You also have to use text commands to pick items up and be able to use them. In order to be able to fight the monsters, you need to have a sword. Without the sword, you are not able to fight at all. The details and descriptions of the rooms are very well done and that makes it easier to understand where you are and what you have to do.
The game is also played in real time which means that the monsters will not wait for you to type in some kind of command like, attack monster, before attacking you. They have their own minds (so to speak) and attack you whenever they feel the need, so you should be prepared. This game is also a little more difficult than other maze type games of its time because it has puzzles that you have to solve. Some of the text commands for the puzzles are quite obvious to figure out, while others are more difficult and will stump you. As in some games where you can carry an unlimited amount of items on your person, this one you can only carry a limited amount which can make it hard to decide which to keep and which to get rid of to lighten your load and help you out. There are only around 83 or so rooms that you have to go through, but the game is still very short in the fact that it is very easy to play.
If you do not look at the graphics (which are pretty much non-existent), it is a good adventure text puzzle game for its time. Just do not get too upset when the game is over too soon because you can always play it over and over again. It is a very good brain trainer for using logic to solve the puzzles.
