Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 11/23/2007
Infocom, which became a huge game provider in later years, first brought Enchanter on the scene as its ninth video game offering in 1983. It is a text-based, fantasy style role playing game that was intended to be the fourth installment in Infocom’s Zork trilogy. However, it spawned its own unique series instead.
In Enchanter, the Circle of Enchanters is faced with a dilemma involving the mega-evil warlock, Krill. At their wits end, the greater mages enlist the help of a young and inexperienced novice enchanter and send him to defeat the mad warlock. Their hope: Krill will not recognize the peon on as threat or that he will not even detect the young spell caster’s weak abilities. However, as the player advances toward Krill, gains levels and more magical power and abilities, Krill will begin to respond more appropriately to the youngster’s presence. Obviously, the gamer plays the part of this rookie enchanter and must guide him through the lands to defeat Krill.
As the title would suggest, the action sequences of the game are magically based as opposed to swords or arrows. It is a text-based game, and the parser recognizes over seven hundred commands, giving the user great interaction with the world around him. Many of these commands are in the form of spells that interact with objects by, for example, illuminating them or placing in them in a safe place. There are tons of nonplaying characters that can influence the game, and an impressive magical repertoire to be mastered. Spells must be memorized before being cast, and more magic abilities can be gained by locating scrolls bearing the formulae for many magical endeavors.
Similar to other games of this nature, casting spells and facing tricky combat situations are not your only worries. You must keep the fledgling Enchanter well fed and hydrated. He needs to rest on occasion and do some puzzle solving in order to gain in ranks among the necromancers and have a hope of defeating Krill. But, the crux of the game is magic use. You may as well get started with the magical quest now, because you have a lot to learn about spell casting before you are going to be worthy of the evil warlock, Krill.
