The Faery Tale Adventure is a Microillusions adventure game released to the DOS port in 1986. It is an extremely basic and simple early role playing game that was intended as a tutorial for beginning gamers.
The plot involves three brothers: Julian, Phillip and Kevin. The boys are charged with the colossal task of retrieving an amulet that has been stolen by an evil sorcerer and bringing it back to their village of Tambry. This talisman is the only thing that can protect the town from the dark forces. As the brothers seek the amulet, there are many subplots and side quests that pop up, including rescuing a beautiful princess, fighting witches and killing fire-breathing dragons. The heroes must also battle skeletons and wraiths on a regular
basis.
The game play is singularly different from other rudimentary RPGs for one reason, and that is the variance of the hero. When the game begins, the user plays the eldest brother, Julian. If Julian loses his life, the game does not end. Instead, the user becomes Phillip, the next oldest brother, and then Kevin if Phillip dies. Each brother offers unique strengths and weaknesses for the user to explore and overcome. Upon death, a little blue fairy will wave a wand over the corpse and resurrect the gamer.
Since the Faery Tale Adventure was intended as an introduction for novice gamers, everything from the controls to the battles is quite easy. Still, the map is very large (more than 300 screens across and down) and takes plenty of time to explore. And, while the battles are easy to understand, they aren’t always easy to master, so FTA still provides plenty of challenge for a more experienced RPG gamer. There is also a moral aspect to the story, which provides a twist, if not a challenge. Non-playing characters will react differently based on the gamers’ moral decisions, thus affecting the outcome of the game.
As intended, Faery Tale Adventure is a great game for young or beginning RPG gamers. It is simple and features a short learning curve. Still, it provides enough challenge and excellent game play to intrigue more experienced or even veteran gamers. It’s worth downloading.
