Join Jon, Odie, Nermal and, of course, everyone’s favourite animated cat—Garfield—to solve this point and click style puzzle game released in 2004. It is a fan made adventure of medium length but monumental humour. Everyone remembers the sarcasm, ill temper, laziness and hunger of this cartoon cat created by cartoonist Jim Davis. Garfield’s antics can still be witnessed in most daily newspapers, and many of them are captured in this hilarious adventure.
The premise of the tale is a tragedy of epic proportions, if you are a lasagne scarfing, fat, orange, tabby-cat. Radioactive material is spilled in the home and causes harmless and tasty food to morph into dangerous, bloodthirsty mutants. Double whammy. Loss of food and gain of enemies!
The spirit and character of this spiteful cartoon cat are
well captured in Garfield: Attack of the Mutant Lasagna. Gamers and Garfield enthusiasts will recognize many characters from Davis’s books and comic strip, as well as the animated television series that was once popular on Saturday mornings. There are myriad references to specific episodes and tales. Several of the quests even involve recreating antics viewers have already seen Garfield perform in one comic or another. There are also numerous settings that the user will likely recognize from Garfield flicks, such as Jon’s mother’s home and the famous grocery store.
The game play itself is smooth and the interface is simple and easy to manipulate. This is an extra bonus, since the animated nature of this game is likely to draw the attention of younger players. The puzzles range from simple and straight forward to more complex puzzles-within-a-puzzle. The list of actions that can be performed on or with each item are fairly standard to this style of game and include LOOK AT, MOVE, and USE. The list of available actions is conveniently located in a menu at the bottom of the screen and the inventory is plainly displayed in a menu on the right hand side of the screen.
The graphics are good, Garfield and his friends (and enemies) are true to their animated appearances, and the sounds are very funny. The dialogue is completely believable and reflective of this cat and the scenery is colourful, though basic, in the Jim Davis style. Over all, Garfield: Attack of the Mutant Lasagna is a very playable point and click adventure that is suitable for children of all ages, as well as adults who refuse to grow up.
