Heart of China features the main character, Jake “Lucky” Masters, an Indiana Jones type of pilot in the 1920s. Nurse Kate Lomax was abducted from a Chengdu hospital after healing a youngster’s wounds, and her millionaire father is desperate to see her safely returned. Mr. Lomax hires Lucky to recover his daughter, who has been taken to a fortress held by notorious warlord, Li Deng.

Lucky, upon Mr. Lomax’s suggestion, recruits the help of a mysterious ninja named Zhao Chi. While Chi is an asset to the game, he also presents challenges for Lucky. Chi is
old fashioned and one puzzle is figuring out how to get Chi to board an airplane. Together, they must breach the Deng fortress and rescue Kate. The plot shows itself as nonlinear at this juncture, since the duo has a choice of two entrances that lead into the fortress. The plot will branch many times throughout the game, adding nicely to its replay ability.
Heart of China features a standard time limit. This is put into play by the reward Lomax offers for the return of his daughter. The sum begins as $200,000, a hefty amount in that day. However, $20,000 will be deducted from the total payout for every day that Kate is not returned to her father, beginning from the moment Jake is hired. If that weren’t bad enough, the plot takes a terrible twist in the middle, causing serious delays for Jake and Chi. Kate is bitten by a venomous snake, and the party must fetch the antidote in Nepal. Further advancements in the story line will take the party to Istanbul and Paris, as well.
Heart of China is a singularly unique adventure. Real voice actors were hired to play each of the main characters, giving them more depth and a more human appearance. The graphics are very good as well. There are multiple twists and turns within the story and many ways to die, offering a challenge the second, third, and even fourth time around. There are also some mini-games within the adventure if a gamer should happen to get bored. In all, this is a great adventure game!
