Hugo's house of Horrors is a really interesting, novel, and challenging puzzle game with a hint of action, adventure, mystery, and strategy built in. It is definitely a jewel in the gaming world, particularly based on the time that this game was developed. The graphics are all that you can expect from an old game made by an independent developer, maybe even less than you would expect, but you will quickly get over the lacking graphics and be sucked into the addicting and interesting game play.

As the game starts you are Hugo, whose girlfriend Penelope has vanished into a creepy haunted house. The game is purely type based, "Go to door"[Enter] "Open Door"[Enter] "Look Under Rug" etc. This can get extremely
annoying, but also adds a very interesting twist to the game play. You advance in the game by collecting items to aid you in your quest such as a knife, dog whistle, steak, candle, and rubber bung. Aside from just finding these items you also must figure out how and when to use them. For example, if you use the dog whistle at the wrong time a massive dog will come running and eat you.
This is a very challenging action puzzle game that requires a good deal of thought and will give you many hours of play time, as well as several failed attempts, at rescuing Penelope. Be sure to save often because starting over every time that you die will get extremely annoying.
Have you already tried this game, or does it seem like one you would like? If so, you will not be let down. This game has two sequels along the same general ideology although with different challenges, quests, and puzzles. All together this trilogy will guarantee hours of interesting game play that will leave even the most skeptical gamer begging for more.
Even after beating the game, if you wait a few months and then try again, you will find the game just as challenging and as difficult and fun, as you remember it being the first time.
