The game Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire is actually the sequel to the game Hero’s Quest: So You Want to be a Hero by Sierra On-Line. It is very similar to the original game but it does have some differences in terms of the game play. The original game was actually a big hit so there were high expectations for the sequel. Thankfully, Quest for Glory II did not disappoint. It is a pretty standard point and click adventure game with a menu that is easy to learn.
It features a lot of puzzle solving and inventory collecting quests, as well as some role playing elements, since you can improve your character through the completion of tasks.
The plot is linear but the game is well made so it’s not boring. In the beginning of the game you are on a flying carpet with the characters Shamee, Shema and Abdulla Doo. When you get to Shapeir, you find that the Emir of Raseir is missing and Shapeir is under a dark spell. Now it is up to you to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the Emir.
You can play as any of the three characters—thief, fighter or wizard-- but your character is not limited to quests based on your character’s class-- you can
compete in different quests regardless of which character you choose as the protagonist. You can benefit from the cross-training that you will get from the different sub-quests. It is nice and sometimes necessary to pick up some of the skills of the character class that you did not select. The city is huge and the game can be quite complex, but it is extremely fun so you wouldn’t mind spending a lot of time on the game.
The whole storyline runs for thrity days. The graphics are good. It was actually pretty stunning during the game’s time of release but because it was created with just 16 colors, the graphics is not as amazing as the graphics of the games that we have today. The setting still features many details and really gets you in the game. The music is good and really evokes an Arabian feel. Together with the good graphics, you get a game that evokes an Arabian theme.
The game makes use of the mouse and the keyboard for control. There are some actions that you must type in while there are things that require clicking on the menu found on the screen. It takes several minutes to get used to the game but the whole system works well for the game.
This game is a fantastic sequel. With the good graphics, great music, easy controls and smooth animation, it’s impossible for anyone not to be impressed with the game. The game is very entertaining and will not cause you any frustrations at all. The game also has high replay value because of the variation of experiences you can have with the game. Overall it is a well-made game that I highly recommend.
