Red Dwarf is a fun role playing game with elements of puzzle and strategy that was based on an older sitcom that was broadcast on BBC. The game was released in the middle nineties in order to capitalize on the popularity of the comedy series, and many of the television show’s main characters and funnier supporting cast members can be seen as inspiration for those in Red Dwarf. The game, like the series, is set well into the future and offers some wild science fiction themes and futuristic scenarios.

In Red Dwarf, the user will play the character of Lister. Lister is the last member of the human race left in known existence, and he has stowed away on board a massive space trader, the Red Dwarf, which
will serve as the majority of the gaming environment. He is not alone. With him are several interesting companions, characters reminiscent of the television series. Cat is a feline descendant of Lister’s own former four-legged companion. He has a dry sense of humor and is terribly concerned with fashion and public perception. Along for the ride is also Kryten the cleaning android. The ship’s computer, Holly, seems to have become an ally of sorts, and finally there is Rimmer. Rimmer is the hologram of a dead, former crew member. Rimmer is a constant annoying nagger, and Lister is not terribly upset that he is dead.
Red Dwarf the game, as well as Red Dwarf the ship, are both full of puzzles and challenges. Understanding, or at least being familiar with the television series, will help the users to better understand the skills and natures of the different playable characters, but it is not a necessity for solving the puzzles. As the game progresses, the characters will level up, similar to the conventional role playing games. There are several skills that will increase as the user’s character becomes more experienced, including the standard strength and intelligence. The level of the user’s attributes will determine his skills and power.
Red Dwarf is a very interesting futuristic game that utilizes great graphics and some pretty upbeat music to draw the user into the game, and also to lighten it up a bit and make it more entertaining and playable. It is an early game, but it still has a lot of merit, especially to people who were or are still fans of the comedy series. The characters are deep, believable, sometimes silly and are fun enough to make the game, with or without the nice bonus extras the game has to offer.
