Space Quest 3 is one of the most incredible games I have ever played, despite its simplicity and shortness. The story follows on from the previous Space Quest, space Quest 2, incidentally. After years of being in stasis, space janitor, Roger Wilco awakens on a distant planet in a distant spaceship scrap yard. His first objective is to get away from this planet by putting together a working ship. After playing and enthralling game of Astrochicken, he discovers that The Two Guys from Andromeda have been kidnapped and it is his mission to save them.
The game-play is the same as other early Sierra adventure games, where you must type the action you would like to take and use the arrow keys to move Roger around the screen. It can be tedious at times trying to work out specifically what and item is called although you can normally find out by typing "look around." Another annoying thing is the unfortunate, yet hilarious deaths the game has to offer. They are lurking around every corner and occur for all sorts of ridiculous reasons. A brilliant point of the game is that some of the puzzles have multiple solutions to them, which means that you can play through it several times trying to find them all and getting the maximum number of points.
The
graphics are what you would expect from a game made roughly twenty years ago, not fantastic, but distinguishable. The sound is in the wonderful form of blips and beeps, yet the title screen does have a fantastic composition using these. As the technology was not anywhere near the state it is now, these, now, very basic concepts were very advanced for the time and we should be thankful for them.
There are some very colorful characters who you will encounter throughout your travels and a very sarcastic commentator mocking Roger at every available opportunity, The creators of the game, Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, who happen to be The Two Guys From Andromeda who you should be rescuing, have a fantastic sense of humor and it is really shown in this game.
In conclusion, this game is great for anyone who's ever dreamed of being a space hero, or even a janitor. While the graphics aren't up to today's standard the rest of the game more than makes up for it by being one of the most epic adventures a janitor has ever come face to face with.
