Spellcasting 301: Spring Break is the third instalment in some rather unusual games created by Steve Meretzky at Legend Entertainment Company. It is a text based adventure that was released in the early nineties and was developed specifically for the DOS platform.
Like its predecessors, Spellcasting 301: Spring Break continues to follow the life of Ernie Eaglebeak as he struggles through challenge upon challenge at the Sorcerer’s University and fights to stay one step ahead of Joey Rottenwood, his evil stepfather. This instalment reaches the Spring Break portion of the schooling, and the fourth instalment, Spellcasting 401: The Graduation Ball never was completed. In this particular tale, Ernie Eaglebeak is trying to help his college fraternity win the Spring Break competition, and seduce some very beautiful
beach babes along the way.
So Ernie heads to Fort Naughtytail, the greatest Spring Break hot spot known to young man. It all seemed like a grand plan and the ultimate vacation until Ernie learns that the Getta Loda Yus from the Saint Weinersburg Academy of Magic are also planning to vacation in Fort Naughtytail. With their chiseled frames and rakish good looks, Ernie’s chances of scoring with any hot young co-eds are about to get washed out to sea. He and his nerdy fraternity the Hu Delta Pharts don’t stand a chance, but won’t go down without a fight. After a massive argument that solved nothing, a woman called “The Judge” proposes a contest between the warring frats, with the winner gaining the title “King of the Beach” and the losers being banned from Fort Naughtytail for the next five springs. Ernie will have to use all of his wits to solve the puzzles about the beach, find items that can be used to advance the plot, and test everything he knows about magic in order to beat the Yus and win back the beach.
This game is very easy to play and relies strongly on some bathroom humour and others to make it interesting. The interface is user friendly, and the text and puzzles are both well-done and appropriate for text adventures. Overall, it is a very good little game, even more entertaining than the Spellcasting games that went before it. Too bad the sequel never bore fruit. As it stands, you can at least get a taste of the adventure, although no closure, with the third instalment of the game. Download it now.
