Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is an adventure game released by Mindscape in the very late eighties. It was initially released for the Amiga, and was later ported to many different formats. It is obviously based on the popular Star Trek television series.
The game begins when Captain James T. Kirk is contacted regarding the kidnapping of three consuls from the planet Nimbus III. The Vulcan villain Sybok is using them as leverage in an effort to take over control of the Enterprise. Sybok has plans for the Enterprise. He believes he has located the fabled Garden of Eden on the planet Sha Ka Ree, located far beyond the Great Barrier. Using the consuls as hostages, Sybok forces the crew of the Enterprise to chauffer him into this true final
frontier. Unfortunately, Kirk’s longtime rival, Klingon Klaa intercepted the transmissions and is intending on setting an ambush at the Garden of Eden for Kirk and his crew.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier offers three different levels of difficulty (Cadet, Captain, and Admiral) and features a combination of arcade style action and adventure. The user will have to navigate through tricky wormholes, engage the Klingon forces, duel in hand-to-hand combat and so forth. The Enterprise will have to locate and pick up delightful crystals to supply the power source for the ship, detonate mine fields to avoid blowing up and dodge space debris. A word of warning: the game features no saves, so any action sequence that succeeds in killing you will have to be replayed as will all of those before it. This can be a source of great frustration.
Basically, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is a combination of various arcade action sequences with some adventure stories thrown in to create a holistic game. The plot is sound, and very Trekkie, and the graphics are really good for its day. The game is very short, and can be completed in a few hours, with any luck. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is a satisfying and worth downloading that will be a great single day time waster, especially well-suited to the true fan of the Star Trek series.
