The Neverhood is an outstanding example of creativity in game design. This game is a flash back in time to the classic games such as Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle and Maniac Mansion. The story is about a character named Clayman who has to save the day. The two most striking features about this game is one, the unusual art style that surrounds the landscapes and the characters. The second feature is the storyline which revolves around religion and pokes fun at notion of creation (Garden of Eden etc).
In one part of the game you can go through the hall of records and read all the writing on the walls. This is basically a miniature bible that tells the history of the neverhood.
The game-play in the neverhood is your standard pick and click. So you can pick up items and solve the various puzzles that are laid through the world. The puzzles designs in the neverhood should be praised since this is the first adventure game that I didn't have to use a walkthrough in order to get to the end since the puzzles are hard but they are solvable, which is a big plus in my books.
The only downside to the puzzles is that they are totally random and have nothing
to do with the storyline, though you really don't care when you play through it. The puzzles range from picture mixing games to remember games and right down to unusual mazes. My personal favorite game is the mouse game where you control a mouse and navigate it through a maze to find cheese.
There are three ways of transportation in the neverhood one is inside on a 2d angle, the 2nd way is when you get outside the camera switches to a first person camera view. And the 3rd way is by traveling on some weird machine.
Another notable quality of the neverhood is its humor which is quite historical. The stop-motion animation of the characters gives the neverhood a handmade quality that is what made the game famous as it was the first stop motion animation game to hit the game market and is renowned as a classic. It has also sparked a sequel on the play station (skull monkeys) and it also extremely fun. So if you like pick and click adventure games, do yourself a favor and download this game!
