Game Review (written by Strangechicken) Added on: 07/30/2007
Perils of Poom is yet another great game created in the AGS by Chris Jones. Perils of Poom is a humorous, medium length, futuristic space comedy and one hell of a fun adventure game. Perils of Poom is about a man named Mac Arack who as the title might suggest has to suffer many Perils on his Quest to find Poom (what is Poom? Well it’s a drug but that is explained later one). One of his Perils is escaping the bounty hunter who continuously pop up where Mac is, but its okay because like the games made by the LucasArts company you can’t die, plus the bounty hunters aren’t too bright so it’s easy to outwit them…
When we first meet Mac Arack the poor guy just can’t hold down a job, he’s constantly being fired… until one day when Mac comes home after being fired after an unfortunate incident that includes being locked in the store room by some bad co-workers, he finds a sign in the form of a phone number; Moses’ phone number, he then goes to visit Moses’ to discover that Moses wants to employ Mac to smuggle an extremely illegal drug (aren’t most of them) called Poom. Now as Mac you must get the Poom by whatever means necessary which includes stealing a space ship for a man who bears quite a reasonably close appearance to the character of the salesman ‘Stan’ in the Monkey Island series.
The game is full of fun and laughs from beginning with heaps of interesting characters including the ‘Stan From Monkey Island like’ space ship salesman mentioned above! Other memorable characters include Goths, Hippies, Receptionists (who all have to look the same and all have the die their hair blonde because of new regulations on that planet), dim-witted bounty hunter and a Mad Scientist living in the middle of the desert. There are also many memorable locations throughout the game such as the desert planet ‘Tooteo,’ the apartment style planet Phlessi VI and most importantly the planet Poomside where you can obtain as the name suggests the drug that you need ‘Poom’. On Poomside there is an amusement park called Poomside (perhaps this could be another throw back to the Monkey Island series because Le Chuck had his Carnival of the Damned on “Monkey Island’). This is only the first game in the Perils of Poom series (the second has not been made to the best of my knowledge) but after playing and enjoying this game you like me will be dying to play the sequel.
