Game Review 1 (written by Nintendofanatic) Added on: 01/29/2007
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego is a very enjoyable game from my childhood. You are introduced to the organization called ACME, who puts extensive work into catching a famous criminal, Carmen Sandiego, hence the title. She steals numerous treasures from all over the world, and your job is to arrest her and her numerous goons by taking back things that Carmen and her comrades stole and using them as clues to catch all of them. The story is entertaining, and the characters you meet along the way tend to be stereotypical villains taken straight from comic book guidelines.
The characters are entertaining, despite being stereotypical, however.
The game takes you to very many locations across the globe to find stolen items, criminals, and clues hinting at where to find Carmen Sandiego. The game gives you a sense of satisfaction when you go through all of its locations, and the whole experience is just entertaining.
As for the graphics, they're excellent for their time, showing an enormous amount of detail in every locale but if a remake was to be done, I would expect a major graphics renovation, but still, this game has the look that it should for its style of gameplay.
For the music element of this game, it was actually done in a very cool way, having different music in every different country,

that fits the theme of each country closely, like the US having urban style music.
But what about the gameplay, the part that makes the game? Rest assured, it's great. You go from country to country to find the essential clues needed to catch the antagonists. As previously mentioned, you need the clues to catch the criminals, and it is very challenging to find some of those clues, as some of them are just ridiculously difficult to find. Let's just say that for a good portion of this game, I needed to look up guides online to figure out what to do next. However, the pure sense of satisfaction you get from figuring out what the clues mean is a large amount. Plus, not only do you get great gameplay, but you also learn new and interesting facts about the locations that you may have never known before!
Basically, when it comes to getting this game, I would not hesitate to download this game, as it's free, so you have nothing to lose. Go ahead. Download it. You deserve it.

Game Review 2 (written by Mbrookes) Added on: 08/26/2006
Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego (1980's DOS version) is a simple but much more challenging version of the new CD Rom game. It doesn't have great graphics or many colors, but to play you have to have lots of general knowledge based primarily on geography, banking and some history.
The idea of the game is to complete 13 cases to find you an ACE detective and capture Carmen Sandiego as well as her little posse. There is a time limit and a sleep quota which often get in the way when just starting out. There are no places to look up the answers, unless you have encyclopedia’s nearby or feel like searching the internet, and as you gradually build up your knowledge and find your preferred areas, the game becomes simpler and the cases are solved in less time. Before any arrest is made, however, you must visit INTERPOL to get a warrant to arrest the criminal.
The areas you can choose to find clues in include banks, consulates, palaces, museums, sports clubs, hotels and others which escape me right now! All of these places give different clues for the countries you might be visiting. But, don't be fooled by knowing country names - you must know the capital cities for that are where you fly to, only finding out the country name when you get there. A terrific way to quickly learn country capitals.
Some of the countries and currencies no longer exist, so it is an easy way to find out what used to be. I used to play this game when I was in Primary School in the 1980s. We would stay behind after school just to have a go on the one computer in the classroom and write down the information we found out in a little Carmen book so we could quickly reference clues and criminals later. As it does not require mouse control, it is a simple game that I would recommend to primary aged students and early secondary requiring a bit of a boost. As said, the graphics are the dot matrix type and very few colors, but the clues and speed of the game is so much better than the newer version, not to mention the thinking and remembering you are required to do here!
Other than that, I can only highly recommend Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego to any parent wanting to get a bit of nostalgia into their own child. I hope you’ll enjoy this game!

I thought this and all the other Carmen games were pretty genius. They made you think logically which is something our kids nowadays need. I know that when my children get older they will have the benefit of playing with games like these. I would like to carry on their tradition.

Does anyone have trouble with the sound? I can hear the dialing of the cell and all, but I can't hear the chief or travel agent speaking. Any suggestions as to how to fix it?
