Game Review (written by Julcra) Added on: 02/25/2007
What a treat to find the legendary Zork games on this site. I have played all of the Zork text-based quests since they came out. It has been refreshing to play them over again. I remember watching my older brothers playing the first game back in the day wondering what the heck they were doing. All I could see was a black screen with white text… and them typing directional letters (N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SW, SE) and typing things like “Find, Open, Use, Push, etc. ”
It wasn’t until I got a little bit older that I looked into playing these games myself. And boy did I find a lot of enjoyment after playing these. I had already played games with graphics and to revert to these text-based games seemed like I was going backwards but they were actually more fun, because you never knew what was going to happen or what you would run into.
The plot of this game is to take over the Dungeon Master’s mantle. This game is much harder than the first two games with some rather challenging puzzles that if not done correctly, can actually impact if you win the game or not! (So it might be helpful to find a cheat/walk-thru website to help you in a pinch).
You still have your sword, finding miscellaneous items that you need to figure out what to do with… still the same Zork song and dance. It’s hard to put into words what this game lacked from the other two. It didn’t have the scoring/ranking system like its predecessors… and you refer to your sword as your friend… trying to be funny but not really!
The best part of this game IS the references to Zork I & II and maybe the ending. Other than that, if you’re looking for an adventure based text-game, I would highly recommend you playing Zork.
