Game Review (written by Paps) Added on: 01/17/2007
Ahh. Arkanoid one of my favourite and most played classic games of all time. I started with a game called breakout until I discovered this game which made the experience so much better by offering more.
Arkanoid is your classic game of breakout using a small paddle-like bar to hit the ball around the playing field into the various different coloured bricks that make up a level. Should you miss the ball with your paddle, you lose a life. You can gain extra lives by reaching certain scored by breaking bricks.

What makes this game different from the classic is the added twist of power-ups that drop throughout the gameplay. These power-ups can either be positive or negative. For instance, a certain power-up may make your

paddle larger while another may make it smaller. The chances of you hitting the ball with a larger paddle are much better. The game also includes power-ups that speed up or slow down the gameplay. Other power-ups include the ability to fire bullets or lasers from your paddle which can also break the bricks to clear the levels. Another power-up allows you to "grab" a ball and fire it at will instead of it just bouncing off. Some power-ups even split the ball into several balls which makes it harder, but you can usually break more bricks. You only need to keep one ball alive though.
The simplicity of this game is what makes it the most fun in my opinion. Anyone can just pick it up and play as all you need to do is move the paddle back and forth while occasionally pressing a button to activate certain power-ups. It also is all about coordination and doesn't require much thinking which is really good for those times when you just need to pass some time. Don't let its simplicity fool you as this can become a challenging and highly addictive game in the later levels, which there are hundreds of by the way. I don’t think I ever actually "beat the game" as there are really a lot of levels. I'm sure you will want to get to the end of it.
All in all, this is a simple classic game that can be enjoyed by many. Its graphics are pretty standard for a classic game. It is easy to pick up and play whether you want it to keep you busy for hours on end or just play a few rounds. I definitely recommend this game to anyone looking for some good fun.

One of the most famous games of this type, Arkanoid was first released on arcade machines by Taito, then transferred to PC's by Nova Logic. You know what to do right? Fire the ball into the blocks and make sure it doesn't fall down the screen. And keep doing that for hundreds of levels (or so).
